The Rotterdam harbour didn't have enough storage space after the war for bread grain and fodder. To solve this problem overlaid Rhine barges were temporarely used as floating warehouses. At the same time a new construction programme for grain warehouses was also started. SHOTS: - In the harbour lies a large fleet of inland navigation vessels side by side; on deck the laundry flutters on the clothesline; a milkman with a rack of milk bottles on his shoulder walks from one ship to another; - ship's dogs barking at eachother from the gangways; - skipper's wives hang out the laundry; a skipper turns the grain in the hold with a rake through an opened deck hatch; - inspectors go aboard and test the grain in the hold for temperature and smell through the opened deck hatch; - workers stand in the hold and turn the grain; - a suction hose of a grainelevator sucks grain from a hold; - ext. shots of a new grain warehouse that is being built ashore.
